What is CoAching

Coaching vitalizes you and accelerates your success in life! It is not only the top athletes who hire coaches. Did you know that many successful figures like Steve Jobs (Apple), Bill Gates (Microsoft), Eric Schmidt (Google), and Elon Musk (Space X & Tesla) all hired coaches who helped them win games in the business world?   It is reported that roughly 40% of CEOs in the Fortune 500 hire a business coach.

Coaching is an ongoing intentional conversation with the objective to achieve goals, solve personal problems in life, and seek continuous self-growth. Now, you might wonder if a simple conversation can really make such a difference. It is important to note that trained coaches use the right coaching techniques to create a meaningful and insightful conversation for the client. Through a series coaching, a client will develop a more positive outlook in life, deepen self-awareness, grasp full potential within, and make measurable action plans to strive forward.

Coaching Flow

Sir John Whitmore and his colleagues developed a GROW coaching model in the 1980s.  It is adopted by numerous companies, including Google, to help raise the performance of their employees.  Here is a quick view of GROW model.

①   Goal   “What is it that you are going after?”

②   Reality  “In comparison to your goal, where are you now?”

③   Options  “What are your options now?”

④   Will  “How would you apply new insights and discoveries into your life?”

Who Receives Coaching? and Why?

To achieve goals

Ex.1:  Raising a monthly revenue from $1,500 to $7,500 for a startup business.  A client would work with a coach to write out a big goal and break it down to measurable smaller goals.  The client will come up with his action plans and the coach keeps him accountable with the regular follow ups.

Ex.2: A client finds her own natural talent, and comes up with a business plan.  A coach helped her identifying what she is good and passionate about.  The client went onto find her vocational calling in life.

Ex.3: A student wanted to aim 1350 on her second SAT.  A coach helped her develop a better study habit and mental exercises to stay healthy.

To raise the level of satisfaction in life

Ex. 1:  An unmotivated client was extremely bored of his life, and was binge watching NetFlix dramas every night.  His initial coaching goal was to sleep and get up early.  Once he developed a healthy sleeping habit, he went onto start his own business from scratch.  He is now a changed man.

Ex. 2: A pessimistic student never stopped whining about his unhappy circumstances (especially during covid-19).  However, through coaching, he began to get rid of his sense of entitlement and learned to see life with much more gratitude.  The result was, less stress, and a happier life.

To continue to grow and make impact

Ex.1: A client with low self-esteem used to always compare himself with his peers.  Yet, through coaching, he learned to spend less time contemplating about the success of others and find his self-value.  Now, he suffers less from the opinions of others, and feels much more free to be himself around others.

To improve relationships

Ex 1: A client felt great stress in maintaining good relationships with his coworkers.  Coaching helped him deepen his self-awareness and he has become better in reading emotional cues from others.

Ex.2:  A married couple suffered from being dissatisfied with each other when it comes to communication.  Through coaching, they identified the heart of the problem, and they found ways to peacefully resolve the conflicts at home.

To solve a problem

Ex 1:  A team leader needs to confront the team member about his attitude at work, but he is concerned because his last confrontation meeting with the other employee did not go well.  Through coaching, the team leader thought through what approach would be most acceptable to the team member.  As a result, the team member was receptive to the feedback and came away with a higher motivation for work.

Ex 2:  NGO is always short on volunteers.  Through coaching, the rep from the NGO found a better way to approach the potential volunteers and how to attract them through an appealing advertisement.
